MY INTERVIEW WITH KAREN STINSON

Q1.  What did you want to be when you grew up?

Fashion Designer and Stewardess.

I learned to sew and make some of my own clothes at the age of 10 years old. I loved cutting out the patterns and was always fascinated with the beauty of the fashion industry.

I have an Associate of Arts in Fashion Merchandising and started my retail career in 1977, at 18 yrs old with Judy’s, a fashion forward boutique, headquartered in Century City, CA.

I worked and did Trunk Shows for a Showroom at the Dallas Apparel Mart in the mid 80’s, where I met a woman that asked me to move to New Orleans, LA and help her manage and buy for 2 boutiques, that were part of a family business.

After a brief vacation to Miami, I decided I wanted to live there, so I interviewed for a management position with Burdines Department Store in Miami, and was hired as a Merchandising Manager – for Dadeland Mall, the largest retail volume store, outside of New York – Manhattan.

Six months later I was promoted to the Central Buying Office in Downtown Miami.

In late 1992 I heard about a small Private Airline hiring flight attendants (with no height requirements) for positions based out of Ft. Lauderdale. I interviewed and was hired.

Now, 25 years and 4 airlines later, I have made a career out of the one and only job I was ever truly meant to do. It allows me the opportunity to experience something new and exciting each and every time I walk out my front door and connect with people from different countries, cultures, and all walks of life.

Q2.  What is one of your most treasured accomplishments?

Perseverance.

I interviewed in Fall of 1983, at (American Airlines) for flight attendant and made it to the final interview, but was officially “too short” at 5’1″. It was the only job that I had ever really wanted, it was my dream and my destiny.

I never gave up my dream, so when the height and weight restrictions were lifted for Major US Carriers, I interviewed again, and officially became an American Airlines Flight Attendant, 15 years later, on December 11, 1998.

Q3. When did you start practicing yoga?

Thirteen  years ago, at the age of 45, I was introduced to Yoga by my personal trainer, and started my physical practice with American Power Yoga in Dallas, Texas and Bikram Yoga in St Louis, MIssouri.

I volunteered for over 3 years at Omega Workshops, where I was able to meet and practice with world-renowned Master Yoga Teachers. Yoga slowly transformed my life from the Outside to the Inside.

After finding Terri Cooper in 2008, I finally made the commitment and completed the 200 Hour Teacher Training with 305 Yoga, graduating June 2014.

I completed a 300 Hour Teacher Training in Rishikesh, India, the birth place of yoga, May 2016, and a Master Level Training, November 2016, both with Anand Mehrotra, Founder of Sattva Yoga Academy.

Adopted from Seoul, Korea as a four month old infant, I feel my life is a GIFT, and was given to me to live to the Fullest and to be of Service to others.

There are no coincidences in life!  My life came full circle when I met Nancy Rivard, founder of Airline Ambassadors, and she offered me the opportunity to teach yoga on retreat missions to Orphanages around the world.

To date, I have been to Bogota, Colombia 3 times and Port-au-Prince, Haiti sharing the gift and practice of yoga & mindfulness with the staff, volunteers, and children.

I also volunteer teach 1 day a week at a rehabilitation and nursing center close to my home in North Miami.

And on any given layover, you can find me teaching yoga classes, FREE to all crew members.

I have found my zeal in yoga and my passion is to teach and to connect with people near and far.

Q4.  Please share with our tribe of Women, one piece of advice that you have received which has helped you throughout your journey?

A quote that my Mother wrote, words that she lived her life by, and the work ethic that she instilled in me.

“Don’t ever stop learning. Do whatever you do to the best of your ability. Learn from your mistakes, turn every opportunity into a success. And don’t stop until you do.” ~ Jonnie Stinson

Q4. How does it feel to travel the world?

There is nothing more rewarding than travel; the opportunity to meet new people, experience foreign cultures, cuisines, and lifestyles.

It opens your eyes to the vastness of this world and of life.

It helps you to appreciate even the smallest things that we so often take for granted.

And creates a greater sense of compassion and tolerance.

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” ~ Saint Augustine

Q5.  Any future collaborations you want to share for 2017?

Every morning when I awaken I open my heart and hands up to everything that I am grateful for and to the abundance that continues to grace my life with recurring synchronicity.

I will continue to volunteer teach for the Airline Ambassadors at Orphanages around the world.

I am committed to offering yoga, meditation, pranayama, and mindfulness to as many children and adults as I can reach and am open to Partnering with any organization that wants to share the gift of yoga to help raise awareness and funds for their project.
